Roosevelt Alumni for Racial Equity (RARE) To Host an Open Discussion on Growing up Biracial on May 1st, 2023 5-6:30p

/ April 24, 2023

During a RARE October 2021 Open Discussion, mayoral candidate Bruce Harrell, spoke about the challenges growing up as a “minority within a minority”. The following month, he was elected mayor of Seattle. Harrell, as well as other prominent elected leaders like Barack Obama and Kamala Harris, is just one of America’s fastest growing ethnicity: biracial Americans.

After a hiatus, on Monday, May 1, 2023 5-6:30p PST, RARE will host an Open Discussion featuring students and adults of mixed race sharing their thoughts and experiences of growing up biracial in 21st Century America.

Professor LeiLani Nishime will serve as moderator. Professor Nishime is a Professor of Communication at the University of Washington and the Grants Manager for the Seattle Asian American Film Festival. Her research interests are Asian American Media, gender, and technology. Her book Undercover Asian: Multiracial Asian Americans in Visual Culture is published by University of Illinois Press.

Our panel includes:

*TaRessa Stovall, a mixed-race BLEWISH boomer and writer who specializes in intersectional identities, anti-racism, and anti-colorism.

*Jessamyn Young is a 2nd generation Roosevelt High School (RHS) graduate. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from Loyola University in New Orleans. She is now back in Seattle pursuing a career in podcasting and writing.

*Quincy Purcell is a current senior at RHS. After graduation in June he will be off to college. Quincy is actively involved in racial equity movements at RHS and acts as student ambassador for RARE. He was featured in the documentary RHS: Beyond Black and White.
