A Quilt Maker Volunteers with RARE!
There are many ways to volunteer for RARE contributing your time and talents.
Julia Douthwaite Viglione, RHS ’75, is a retired university professor who loves to teach and make quilts!
Since RARE’s inception she has supported the James A. Davis Scholarship winners by making them beautiful keepsake quilts. Each winner is given the opportunity to choose from among the quilt themes that Julia makes.
Themes range from Seattle scenes to culturally relevant images to literary references. Then Julia applies her incredible skills and artistry to fashion a quilt that the winner can take to college to use as a comforter or hang on the wall.
Pictured here is scholarship winner Hager, RHS 2025, with her choice of a beautiful Wizard of Oz quilt from Julia!
In addition to making quilts, Julia teaches free creative writing classes for children. If you would like to see all that she does, go to honeygirlbooks.com.
