A Benefit of Getting Older!

/ July 2, 2026

Hi Friends,

It’s been a long time since I was a student at Roosevelt High School.

However, a few years ago I reconnected with some RHS classmates – and RARE was born! Just last year RARE celebrated its 5-year anniversary.

It warms my heart to see the positive and meaningful impact RARE has had upon a new generation of RHS students and alumni since then!

Referring to my “benefit of getting older” title, there are many!

I’d like to highlight one today: reducing our tax liabilities by supporting the nonprofits we love!

If a person has an individual retirement account (IRA), he or she MUST begin taking required minimum distributions (RMD’s) in the year in which that person turns 73 years of age.

If that person takes the distribution themselves, it is fully taxable. However, if you make a qualified charitable distribution (QCD) directly to a qualified charity, like RARE, the QCD is not taxed!

Please click on this link to learn more, and make sure to consult your tax advisor, because everyone’s situation is unique.

If you’re able to make a QCD to RARE, you’ll be making an important impact on the lives of many young people right here in Seattle. Your gift supports RARE programs, like Connections, where students develop leadership skills, make new friends, and become agents of change in their schools and beyond.

I hope you’ll join me in empowering the next generation.

Warm Regards,

Joe
