Beyond Black & White: A Seattle Public Schools Supplementary Resource and City-Wide Film Showings
Roosevelt High School: Beyond Black and White, the documentary produced by RARE that captured the story and history of our organization’s founders, is officially a supplementary resource for Seattle Public School teachers!
After meetings with SPS curriculum staff, the film was shown to all social studies department heads, who suggested it would best fit in Ethnic Studies or U.S. History classes. The film is now available as a supplementary, optional resource in the curricular folders for all high school teachers to access for classroom screenings and discussion.

Since Fall 2024, RARE’s documentary has been shown at six venues through collaborations with community partners. Each post-screening discussion was catered to its audience with the intentions of building awareness and encouraging conversations about race, class, and education.
The venues include the University Heights Center in collaboration with the Social Justice Film Institute; the Seattle Center Armory stage as part of the Artists at the Center grant; Rainier Community Center for Black Lives Matter at School Week of Action; a Social Justice Cinema course at Seattle University; a Social Justice class at The Center School; and, lastly, the John Stanford Center.Special shout-out to these community partners and the Washington State NAACP Youth Council, whose student leaders have participated as panelists at many of RARE’s film showings, discussing how the community can take action and engage in racial equity initiatives relevant to students.
