RARE Announces 2025 James A Davis, Jr. Scholarship Winners
RARE’s Scholarship & Awards Committee is pleased to announce Hager Gamaleldin and Chloe Mai as the 2025 James A. Davis, Jr. Scholarship winners. These two hardworking and proactive Roosevelt High School seniors are on their way to college, each with a $5,500 scholarship.
Hager Gamaleldin sees racial equity as ‘being able to truly see each other for our merit and what we bring to the table instead of being clouded by negative stereotypes’.
In both the classroom and club activities she combined her art interests with a desire to represent her Muslim community and share her unique perspective in spaces that are largely and historically white. She did just that as co-president of Sports Boosters and of Debate Club, as a member of the Thespian Honor Society, and as the ASR Advertisement specialist paving the way for younger classmates who might not see themselves as belonging.
Hager also advocated for other marginalized groups, such as the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Club, as they sought funding for their sign language competition. Outside of school she was a youth leader in the Muslim Association of Puget Sound (MAPS) leading activities and discussions to help teens develop a confident Muslim identity.
Hager heads to college with the goal of becoming an architect combined with certification in construction management, where she will once again use her skills in art and design while representing her community in a STEM career.
Chloe Mai looks forward to a ‘world where “Liberty and Justice for all” holds truth, and no systems ever limit how great and loving any child, no matter their race, is bound to be.’
She put her goals to work at RHS as the Vice President of the Asian and Pacific Islander Club when she designed and produced a video for this year’s MLK Jr Assembly showing the shared struggles of the Asian and Black communities and the importance of unity.
Her leadership also extended to the areas of music and sports at RHS. As Co-founder and President of the Non-Binary and Women in Jazz Club she led all-women jam sessions to build confidence in the players. As Varsity Captain of the swim team and member of Varsity Tennis she was named the Most Spirited.
Chloe’s understanding of the struggles of people from around the world grew from her contributions to the partnership program with Northern Ireland and South Africa in Hands for a Bridge and also at Helping Link that supports Vietnamese/American immigrants. All of these experiences will serve Chloe well as she heads to college with an eye towards a law degree.
Congratulations to Hager and Chloe from RARE!
