RARE Awards 2023 Scholarships
Roosevelt Alumni for Racial Equity (RARE) has awarded two scholarships to two deserving students of color who will graduate from Roosevelt this June.
Camila Ricardo and Yuena Kim, seniors at Roosevelt High school, will each receive $5,000 to further their educational studies after high school.

RARE’s Core Mission Exemplified Through the Connections 101 Spring Program
At the beginning of March, Connections 101 began its Spring 2023 program at Garfield and Roosevelt high schools. Transitioning from its Summer 2022 pilot group, the five-week program is led by facilitators from Roosevelt Alumni for Racial Equity’s (RARE) partner Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle.
RARE’s Open Discussions Return with a Panel on Being Biracial
Roosevelt Alumni for Racial Equity’s (RARE) Open Discussions made a stirring return May 1st as a panel of five participants who identify as biracial spoke candidly about being of mixed racial ancestry in America and abroad. The group of panelists showed a collective wisdom and a willingness to tell their stories as they navigate lives that have been at times both challenging and exhilarating. Full video here.
On the Current Rise of Censorship in America
On March 7, 2023 the late American writer, Toni Morrison, was posthumously honored by the United States Postal Service with her image on a new Forever Stamp. The honor comes thirty years after Ms. Morrison won the Nobel Prize in Literature, and 34 years after winning the Pulitzer Prize for her novel of slavery, Beloved. It also comes three years after lawmakers in the state of Virginia tried to ban Beloved from high school AP English courses.
