Black History Month 2025
February of 2025 marks the 49th anniversary of the federal government’s formal proclamation recognizing Black History Month (BHM). As has been the custom since 1928 when Carter Woodson proclaimed a week in February as Black History Week, BHM 2025 comes with a theme.
This year’s theme explores how African American history and American Labor history are intertwined.

Thanks to Holgate Street Church of Christ for hosting the event featuring SENTENCED, a documentary co-produced and narrated by NBA star Steph Curry.

OD Recap: Youth & Gun Violence
Student panelists discuss the impact of gun violence on their daily lives at a recent RARE Open Discussion. The event featured thoughtful responses to tough questions about the current gun violence statistics and the needed legislative efforts to combat them. Panelists addressed the mental health challenges and needs as well.
RARE Supports Restorative Practice Community Coalition
The community is invited to learn about the Restorative Practice efforts in Seattle Public Schools. Please join leaders of RARE, other student focused organizations and Restorative Practice experts and practitioners at the monthly Restorative Practice Community Coalition meetings.

Kennel Intervention & Prevention Program Supports RHS Students
Announcing “The Kennel Intervention & Prevention Program” at RHS! This academic support program is under the direction of Saul Patu, Executive Director and is available to all students.
Support at The Kennel Study Hall is available by appointment and hosts drop-in hours on Monday, Tuesday, and/or Thursday, from 4-6 pm for general academic tutoring.

RARE and its Connections program are pleased to be featured in an upcoming issue of Stroll Laurelhurst & Windermere, a magazine dedicated to sharing stories that strengthen community ties. This coverage highlights the impact of RARE’s work in fostering racial equity and a sense of belonging for students in Seattle.
RHS PTSA Encourages Community Memberships
RHS invites all community members to join PTSA! No need to have a current student – or live in Seattle! PTSA leadership notes a significant membership shortfall and a need to increase membership in order to fulfill PTSA budget requests for the year, including teacher mini-grants and Race & Equity Committee grants to student clubs that want to create more inclusion and belonging.
